Inner + Outer: Energies in Asana Practice

with Kathryn Boland

Refine your yoga flow and postures through delving with Kathryn into two seemingly contradictory ideas - draw inwards towards the midline, and shine energy out through the extremities. The former helps build stability and strength, and the latter helps channel energy and breath throughout the body. Skillfully balancing these two general actions, full of much nuance within each separate pose and movement, can create asana practice that is both healing and empowering.

$25 per person.  Kindly register in advance by November 10th. Register here.

Yin and Yang: Iyengar Yoga + Chinese Medicine

with Ruth Knill, LicAc

In this workshop we will explore alignment concepts using the tools of Traditional Chinese Medicine: yin yang in skillful proportions, balancing the 5 elements and 12 meridians. This complementary perspective of yin yang will deepen your experience of alignment and energy in yoga and other embodied practices. The workshop will emphasize yin yang pairs of meridians, fostering a vital, intuitive, and grounded practice.

$25 per person.  Register here.

RUTH KNILL, PhD, LicAc received a doctorate in applied mathematics from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, publishing more than 30 papers in the field of astronomy. She enjoyed her first yoga classes in 1997, but it was through later Iyengar-inspired training that Ruth discovered the power of awareness to transform the body and awaken its intelligence. Moving beyond mere emulation of teachers or others, yoga became the cultivation of deep attention and sensitivity to the details of bodily balance and alignment. Ruth began life-changing studies with Austin-based yoga teacher Bekir Algan, which inspired her to alter her path in life and begin a training in Traditional Chinese Medicine. A licensed acupuncturist in private practice since 2003, Ruth is a certified yoga teacher whom the light of yoga continues to guide, with awareness as her refuge.

What is Yin Yoga?
Yin Yoga is a complementary yoga practice to the more dynamic and invigorating yoga styles. In Yin Yoga, floor postures are held passively for several minutes in order to access a safe and positive ‘stress’ on the deep layers of connective tissue in the body. Physically, Yin Yoga restores and maintains the natural mobility of the joints, energetically, Yin Yoga enhances the body’s energetic flow and supports emotional equilibrium. This practice emphasizes stillness and silence and acts as an introduction to meditation.

{Fundraiser for Project Prakash} Gentle/Restorative Yoga

This class is free, and donations will be collected to raise funds for Project Prakash.  India is home to the largest population of children with curable blindness. More than 1.2 million people across the country suffer from blindness and nearly 40% of them are curable. Project Prakash was founded to provide children suffering from cataracts and congenital blindness with life-changing eye care and surgeries. Project Prakash is a small grassroots nonprofit in Cambridge and have screened 42,000 children, provided eye care to 1,400 and performed surgeries on 480 children. A simple $200 surgery ensures that these children access quality medical care, but the families they work with earn $1.25 per day to support three generations and could never afford medical care.

About Restorative Yoga:  This all-levels class is designed to calm the mind and release tension in the body. No previous yoga experience is necessary. We will begin with a few minutes of gentle movement to warm up the body before settling into restorative postures. With the use of props, we hold the postures to passively open and stretch the body. The instructor offers hands-on assists, guided relaxation, and breath work throughout the class. This gentle practice will relieve stress and pain in the body so that you feel relaxed, calm, and balanced.

Suggested donation $25.  Donations may be made by cash or check.
