Join us for a unique yoga experience at Belmont Acres Farm. Take time to enjoy nature and discover a sense of peace. We will begin the class with pranayama (breath work) to focus the mind and prepare for your yoga practice. The physical practice will include a Hatha style sequence focused on strength and flexibility. The last several minutes of class will include a guided meditation aimed to further quiet the mind and relax the body. {Fundraiser for Project Prakash} Gentle/Restorative Yoga

This class is free, and donations will be collected to raise funds for Project Prakash.  India is home to the largest population of children with curable blindness. More than 1.2 million people across the country suffer from blindness and nearly 40% of them are curable. Project Prakash was founded to provide children suffering from cataracts and congenital blindness with life-changing eye care and surgeries. Project Prakash is a small grassroots nonprofit in Cambridge and have screened 42,000 children, provided eye care to 1,400 and performed surgeries on 480 children. A simple $200 surgery ensures that these children access quality medical care, but the families they work with earn $1.25 per day to support three generations and could never afford medical care.

About Restorative Yoga:  This all-levels class is designed to calm the mind and release tension in the body. No previous yoga experience is necessary. We will begin with a few minutes of gentle movement to warm up the body before settling into restorative postures. With the use of props, we hold the postures to passively open and stretch the body. The instructor offers hands-on assists, guided relaxation, and breath work throughout the class. This gentle practice will relieve stress and pain in the body so that you feel relaxed, calm, and balanced.

In this workshop you will learn about yoga as an evidence-based practice that can be used on its own or alongside traditional western medical treatments to help ease depression and anxiety. You will take away an understanding of how to use yoga in your everyday life to create mental and emotional well-being. Both discussion and practice portions are based on two NIH-funded studies coauthored by Owen and conducted at Boston University School of Medicine, published by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. Our practice includes a centering meditation, pranayama, active and restorative asanas, therapeutic deep relaxation, and coherent breathing (breathing at a rate of 5 breathes per minute).
